Subject of Square:
Spinning Wheel
Quilter’s Name:
Paula Amazeen
Background on subject:
A spinning wheel is a device for spinning thread
or yarn from fiber. It was fundamental to the cotton textile industry prior to
the Industrial Revolution. It laid the foundations for later machinery such as
the spinning jenny and spinning frame, which displaced the spinning wheel during
the Industrial Revolution. Spinning yarn involves taking a clump of fiber and twisting it
into a string. The spinner pulls and twists the yarn
to make it longer and to control the thickness.
Why you chose this subject:
I chose this
subject because I've always been fascinated
with the idea of spinning yarn. My
grandmother had a spinning wheel in her attic,
and I always wished I could try it!
Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.:
I wanted to capture the simplicity of the
spinning wheel because it was such an
innovation in its time, and yet it's a relatively
simple device.
What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it:
I hope that the
quilt and this square in particular will spark on interest in those who see it so that
they’ll want to come to Tuck Museum to see all that it offers about the history of
our town.
