Subject of Square:
Fire Call Box
Quilter’s Name:
Kathy Muxie
Background on subject:
Hampton NH's fire alarm system was first
installed in 1917 by Fire Chief A H Brown. There were five boxes
originally and by the time the system was decommissioned, there were
98 street boxes and 165 master boxes.
Why you chose this subject:
I was interested in the call box at the
museum because my father was a firefighter, and we had call boxes on
every corner in the town where I grew up.
Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.:
I tried to stay true to the
colors of the call box and fire
museum and used a picture of the call
box printed on fabric.
What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it:
The
Hampton Historical Society brings so many elements of the town
together, both past and present, and I hope people find the fire call box is
both interesting and important.
