Subject of Square:
Lantern
Quilter’s Name:
Donnal Onacki
Background on subject:
Similar lanterns are found in the Hampton Historical
Museum. Lanterns were used by those who were harvesting salt hay in the
Hampton Falls Marshes. Those who weren't camping out overnight would look for
the lanterns lit by the campers so they would know where to find them when
approaching in the early hours of the morning.
Why you chose this subject:
I love lanterns old and new because they light the
way softly for others. I researched how lanterns were used in our area and was
able to find something at the Hampton Library which was fascinating to me.
Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.:
I wanted to capture an old
look with dark and light colors to depict
going from dark to light.
What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it:
The look and
function of the lanterns then and how
they look now as well as how many ways
we see them used currently.
