Subject of Square: Viking Rock

Quilter’s Name: Lisa Grashow

Background on subject: There are many claims and evidence of Viking exploration along the coast of New England. Hampton is home to a large granite stone with a runic inscription meaning "Bui Raised Stone." (Ref. Norse Runic Inscriptions along the Atlantic Seaboard, by Olaf Strandwold, 1939).

Why you chose this subject: Viking archaeological remains in North America have been verifiably dated to around the year 1000. The site known as L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vikings, the current name for Scandinavians also known as Norse, Danes and Northmen, streamed out of Scandinavia in the eighth century and reached the Middle East, founded Kyiv, raided much of Europe, the British Isles, and headed west to settle Iceland, Greenland, and launched expeditions to North America by the year 1000. From Erik the Red's Saga we know, Vikings settled Iceland in the 870's and pushed further west to Greenland in the 980's. Further explorations south along the Atlantic coast in their seaworthy ships are part of the story of our American history.

Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.: The focus is on the Hampton coast where Viking Rock was discovered.

What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it: I hope that more people will be encouraged to study archaeology especially as it relates to American history.
