Subject of Square:
Shaving Horse
Quilter’s Name:
Karen Raynes
Background on subject:
This object is in the Leavitt Barn on the museum
grounds. It is used to shave pieces of wood while sitting down. Like a vice, you
would place the wood under the hammer and secure it. You then sit down
comfortably with your work. The Shakers used this device.
Why you chose this subject:
I found that
when showing people around the barn, this
piece always interests them. I did not know
how it works so I researched it.
Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.:
I put a man on the shaving horse to show
perspective. Wood shavings are under his feet. He is comfortable yet at work.
What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it:
The tools made
in the past were functional in design, supporting ease in production. People today
are still using these tools. Some even make a shaving horse of their own to
produce shingles and chair spools while sitting down.
