Subject of Square:
Early Hampton Beach Cottage
Quilter’s Name:
Christine Bushway
Background on subject:
The first tourist cottages were built during the 1930’s.
The beginning of World War Two brought the
rationing of gasoline so shorter trips were
commonplace. To meet the demand motels and
cabin colonies were built. These small tourist cabins
could accommodate a family of four, provided they
spent most of their time outside!
Why you chose this subject:
I chose to sew the cottage because as a very young child, long before we moved
to Hampton permanently, my parents would take our family for a weeklong stay
in a beach cottage here in the summer. It brings back lots of wonderful memories.
Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.:
I tried to duplicate the look of the actual cottage on the grounds of the Hampton
Historical Society. To do so I used fabrics in the colors of that actual cottage.
What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it:
Given the very small size of the cottage, I hope it will generate interest by viewers
in how accommodations were almost 100 years ago. I think they will be amazed
at the idea of 4 people staying in this tiny house!
