Subject of Square:
School Drum
Quilter’s Name:
Judy Bilodeau
Background on subject:
Drums are the oldest instruments which mankind
has ever played, from the early cave man to the modern synthetic drum kits today.
There were two types of drums - bass and snare.
Why you chose this subject:
The history of drums in schools is connected to the
evolution of the drum as a musical instrument and well as to the development of
marching bands and drum corps. Learning to play the drums helped children
develop hand-eye coordination, discipline, responsibility, overcome challenges,
achieve goals, work as a team,
confidence, leadership and learning to
memorize music. Drums in the 1920's
frequently included beautiful painting as
signatures of the company and the
artisans that manufactured them.
Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.:
I chose the colors of the
drum to represent the history of USA,
red, white and blue.
