Subject of Square: Early Map Of Hampton

Quilter’s Name: Diana Clifford

Background on subject: Before the English arrived in this area, later known as Hampton, it was the summer home of Native Americans who came to hunt and fish. In 1638 English Puritans led by the Reverend Stephen Bachiler settled here to raise their cattle. The town of Hampton was founded in 1638 and became the 4th English Settlement in the New World

Why you chose this subject: This early map of Hampton shows us how our town has grown from a town of less than 500 to its current population of over 16,000.

Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.: Thoughts on your representation/design/color choices/etc.: I stitched the streets in basic black and the shoreline in blue. Each red dot signifies a home in 1806.

What you hope this quilt will mean for the people who see it: I hope this quilt helps to enlighten people about the early days of Hampton and some of the unique artifacts, lifestyle and architecture of its residents.
