High Resolution 1841 Map

maps
map This is a map from "a survey made by order of the Town. 1841." It shows most of the historic houses in town and their owners at the time.

This map, when unfolded, measures 24.5 inches by 18 inches. We have scanned it at high resolution and are making it available for download. It is suitable for printing, up to its original size.

There are several versions available for view/download, via links below. Clicking any of these links will display the large image on your screen (although some browsers might be set to automatically downscale pictures to fit the screen). Each will take a long time to finish displaying - as long as 3 minutes with a 56K dial-up connection. Wait until it is fully displayed (your browser's activity indicator will stop).

The act of displaying it on your screen has actually done a "download." At this point, you can save the image to your hard drive by clicking the right mouse button on the image (Mac users just hold the one button down for awhile). A menu will pop up. Click the "Save Picture As..." option and save the image to your harddrive in any folder you like (the actual save by the computer will take very little time). You can then print the picture using any appropriate image-manipulation software (see the bottom of this page for a sugggestion).

After displaying an image and saving it, use the Back button on your browser to return to this page.

  • Complete Map This is the full image. It can be printed at any size up to the original 24.5 x 18 and yield sharp results. It looks nice printed on one regular 8.5 x 11 sheet in landscape format, although the printing is pretty small at this reduced size. Click here to display.

  • Sectionalized Map For folks with regular printers (that print on 8.5x11 paper), we have divided the image into 8 sections, with a little overlap between each. You can download and print each one at full size (200 DPI, portrait orientation) and then tape them together to yield a map very close to the size of the original.

Click on a section of the small map below to display that section in full-size.

  • Center of Town Because the center of Hampton contains the most interesting historical houses, we have blown this area up somewhat, to print nicely in enlarged size on one piece of 8.5x11 paper (200 DPI; landscape format).

Click the small map below to display it in full-size.

If you do not already have an image program, you may be able to print these pictures with your browser. However, a much better choice would be to download the very popular freeware image viewer program IrfanView, available at: www.irfanview.com
